June 2007 – December 2008
The work will continue in Addis Ababa, working in partnership with : CHAD-ET and HAPCSO. The current programme with GOAL will be reviewed, evaluated and a future project agreed. We will begin a pilot programme with PACT in July, this will take place in the Gambella region on the Ethiopian/Sudan border. Working with girls/women attending formal education in the area, sponsored by PACT. These students are from outside the region, are very poor and have left their families in search of education. Many are single mothers. The initial four-week project will, it is hoped pave the way for a full six month programme.
Discussions are underway between Create and a British film company to run and document a programme in central India. Working with HIV orphans we will run a community drama production to be delivered as an educational tool.
Art & Healing Centre Addis Ababa, Ethiopia This is a mid to long term plan. The Create Trust propose to establish a permanent centre in Addis Ababa, for creative educational programmes and a wide range of creative related activities.
Purpose/Aims of the Centre
- A focused centre, where sustainable creative educational programmes will be maintained and developed.
- A dedicated centre of creative investigation, where creative educational training programmes will be offered. Providing a range of creative programmes to other ngo's working in associated areas.
- A space in which children, women & young people could fully explore their creative abilities and fulfil their potential.
- Encourage creative, independent thinking.
- Engender self confidence & self belief.
- Foster hope.
- Provide non-formal education.
- Vocational-training schemes. In which independent creative work, flowing from the creative workshops is encouraged.
- A centre dedicated to all forms of visual & performing arts, from Ethiopia, Africa and western cultures.
- Provide a 'safe' space, free from competition, comparison and fear, in which suppressed feelings may be freely expressed in some creative form.
- A space, in which an exchange of cultural & creative ideas could take place.
- Establishment of an art & culture library (including IT), providing a much-needed resource for local schools and Colleges.
- Organise regular counselling sessions, both individual and group sessions.
- We would employ local people who would be trained to work in a truly creative, inclusive way.
- Offer health educational & awareness programmes.
- The centre would be free to all and funded by donations made through Create.
Objectives
- Training programmes will be scheduled, specialist workers in all areas of emotional/psychological well being will be invited to participate and run creative education training programmes.
- Creative education programmes will be organised, consisting of visual & performance art activities, which will be offered to ngo's working with disadvantaged and traumatised children & young people, these will be delivered by trained workers from the centre.
- Build in new skills, to create work opportunities. The vocational training component of the centre will be designed in an integrated manner with all the other programmes in the space. Individual design of products made will be the hallmark of the training, creativity being the centre from which all other activities arise.
- Broad 12 monthly programmes will be organised, schedules of events will by designed around a general theme, e.g. Create is currently running an ongoing photographic project with the theme 'Family Friends & Home', this could serve as a starting point for a wide range of art activities and events. An exhibition of this work would be a great show to open the centre.
- National (Ethiopian) & international artists will be invited to participate in-group exhibitions. Seminars & workshops, run by participating artists will take place in conjunction with the shows. We will seek to build working partnerships with national & international art centres.
- Performance events, such as theatre and dance will be planned. We are keen to involve & offer opportunity to 'young' artists and would build on existing working relationships, established with Addis Ababa university art & drama departments.
- Films, national & international, would be included in the schedule & shown on a large screen in the centre, these would compliment and be intrinsic to the schedule.
- Local schools and Collages would be encouraged to participate in the centre's programme and the library (including IT facilities) would be available to them for research.
- Workers in health care & health education would run educational programmes, top inform & create greater awareness of related issues.
